Comedy Mass Pongal Show
Siva Karthikeyan and Soori are in town with their Pongal Kondattam after so many postponements and hurdles. Their latest outing with the Varuthappedatha Valibar Sangham director Ponram, Rajini Murugan is a tightly packed Pongal pack with all the ingredients like comedy, glamour, action, sentiments, and romance. The movie exploits Siva Karthikeyan’s emergence as “the super hero of the downtrodden” image to its maximum and that pays off well in the theater.
Director Ponram focuses more on the treatment side rather than the story. The movie is all about Rajini Murugan, played by Siva Karthikeyan and his sidekick PK Soori, played by Soori. The duo leads a carefree and weightless existence in an emotionally tensed and swollen city, Madhura. The elders around them are very hot tempered and sensitive in nature and a spark is enough to burn the city down. Among them are two colossal figures Rajini Murugan’s grandfather, played by Raj Kiran, and Ealrai Mukkan, played by Samuthirakani. How a series of unexpected events catapulted the lives of these people is the rest of the story.
The movie clearly marks Sivakarthikeyan’s spot in the new generation mass stars in Kollywood. He effortlessly shoulders expectations and emotions of Tamil youth from smaller towns like Madhura, Thirunelveli and Coimbatore. The actor has successfully invented a body language and style that counters the metropolitan heroes. Soori has been as menacing as ever with his tongue and looks. The combination works superbly and capable of crack laughter bombs in the theater.
Keerthi Suresh makes a remarkable performance as Karthika Devi aka KD. Not only she ignites romantic pulse in Rajini Murugan’s heart, but engages in some real life street brawls with realistic effect. The actress can look forward to a prosperous 201 6 with similar roles. Samuthirakani and Raj Kiran keep their reputation as two of the most trusted character actors in the industry with measured performances.
Director Ponram keeps the same tempo and wit, he showed in Varuthappedatha Valibha Sangham. All his characters are earthy and very regional in nature. Balasubramaneim’s cinematography is colourful and dynamic. D Imman’s peppy tunes are composed with a festive audience in mind. Rajini Murugan is for those who never mind about the story or the co-ordinates of the story unfolding. Rajini Murugan is fun and fun sans language or boundaries.
